“It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win. We must love and support one another. We have nothing to lose but our chains.” – Assata Shakur
In the summer of 2019, a group of community leaders–pastors, nonprofit leaders, and business people–came gotten together to create the community dream fund collective endeavor designed to raise funds for the explicit purchase of advancing the needs of our community.
For the first two years, all funds collected will be used to support the Louisville Urban League’s Sports and Learning Complex, a culturally responsive project that will advance the causes of community and economic equity for the west end. After those two years, all funds will go into an account and periodically distributed to organizations and groups doing good work for black and marginalize people throughout our community.
The ultimate goal of this project is to create a sustainable and community-driven resource with the potential to fund our own freedom and liberation for our community. “Change will not come if we wait for some other person, or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek” (Obama, 2008). We have to take economic power that we do have and use it to positively catapult our community and our interests forward.
Details of how the funds will be managed and reported, and who will be responsible are ongoing. There is a committee that has formed to begin to examine those details, but the giving can begin today! We encourage you to click the GIVE NOW link above to be taken to a donate page where you can make your contribution right now. No amount is too small for 2 great every little bit counts in the movement for our freedom.
